What to Do, What to Do...

Brrrr! I hope everyone is safe and sound in their warm houses. I know the kiddos have been missing school and really wishing they were learning more about fractions. I am here to remind them that as I shared with them on Monday, I have posted several fraction assignments on Tenmarks.com to be completed. I also have assigned other assignments for practice on the standards we have covered this year. These will be excellent practice for the EOG. Please check your students' progress on Tenmarks.com. We are so fortunate to have another computer program called Conceptua. Students have assignments on here too.
If they are looking for some fun fraction games look no further. These are located on my blog. They know that the reading assignment from Monday is due when we return. I would also like to encourage Lexia useage from home. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Stay warm and I hope to see my favorite third graders on Saturday!
Smiles:)

Science and Math Extravaganza

I just want to say how impressed I am with all of the fantastic presentations/displays that I had the privilege to see this morning as we toured the experiments as a class. Each student shared their experiment with their classmates and me. Thank you for fostering their love of learning by supporting their efforts. I won't be able to make it tonight but wanted to share my enthusiasm with you. Have a great day.

February 11, 2015 Newsletter

Hard to believe we have just over 3 weeks left in the 3rd quarter. We might just escape any bad weather before our March track out. Fingers crossed!

ELA:

Students are reading nonfiction and determining the author’s point of view. They are learning to compare their point of view to the author’s. We will continue to read biographies and identify key details of a person’s life and contributions to society. Students will begin researching a famous person and learning to organize their information using a note taking chart.
In writing students are finishing up their mysteries and beginning autobiographies. Over the next few weeks they will begin using their notes from their biography research to write a paper on their person.

Math:

The students began the unit on fractions last week. They are enjoying the games we have been playing in class. They have been learning about equivalent fractions, explaining why fractions are equivalent and comparing fractions. Please look to the right under Helpful Documents and read the parent letters for information on these fraction standards.

Social Studies:

Students are studying the geographical regions of North Carolina. They will be researching and reporting on the various landforms, climates, people, jobs and places of interest. They will also be using longitude and latitude to locate places on a map.

Valentine Reminder

Please see the letter that was sent home in last week's Wednesday folder with an attached list of student's names. (it was on pink paper)
Have a wonderful evening.

Dear Parents,
Below, you will find the information you need regarding Valentine’s Day.  If you have any questions or concerns please let us know.
The distribution and receiving of Valentines cards is a very fun part of the children's day.  This year the students can decorate a shoe box, cereal box or bag to use as their mailbox, or they may simply bring in a bag to collect their valentines. This activity should be completed at home prior to Valentine’s Day.  The students may bring their completed boxes/bags to school on  Thursday, February 12, 2015       .

                                                                                    Sincerely,
                                                                                    Mrs. Masteller and Mrs. Emerson

                                                 Valentine Cards
Please have your child sign and label his/her Valentine cards.
Students may bring their cards to school on Friday, February 13. The students will open their Valentines that afternoon.
Please remember no peanut products due to allergies.

Progress Reports

I am sure your sweet children ran home and shared their Wednesday folders with you yesterday! :) In them you should have found their progress reports for 3rd quarter thus far. Please review and send the bottom part back signed.

Also, as you may have noticed, we have started fractions. I have put some games on my blog for them to play. they seemed very excited about them today when I showed them. For some students fractions can be a difficult concept. Please review their homework so you can help them from home. Let me know if you have any questions. Have a great evening.

Poetry Readings

Follow the link below to hear poetry readings by our class. Students practiced with partners reading their assigned poem. They were encouraged to adjust their rate of fluency and use appropriate expression. Each child drew a detailed illustration to go with their poem. I think they all did an amazing job! I will post this link on the blog permanently for the students to enjoy!
